The young leaves, or shoots, of the Tea Tree, camellia sinensis, is covered with a delicate hairy down that gives a silver or white like appearance. Hence the name White Tea. The young unfurled leaves also give a needle like appearance attributing the common names like Silvery Tip Pekoe, Silver Needle, White Tip Silver Needle, etc. White Teas are very rare as the harvesting period is very short, only a few days a year.
